1. Get Started With Your DMV Practice Test Online

Every state requires new drivers to take a written knowledge exam in order to obtain a drivers license. Most states require you to take the exam in person, and you may only be allowed to retake the test a limited number of times if you fail it. This is why it is important to prepare for your knowledge exam with a practice test. Our comprehensive practice test and study guide can help you learn and memorize the skills and information you need to know in order to get your drivers license. It includes questions on traffic laws, driving safety procedures, road signs and more. Download your test now to start practicing right away.

2. By Mail

Most states will not allow their residents to take the drivers license knowledge exam via mail and will require them to take the test in person. Some states’ DMVs may be able to send you a printed practice test through the mail if you cannot access the internet or visit your local DMV office. However, it can take a long time before you receive your practice test. Additionally, the postal service may lose your practice test in the mail, further delaying the process. By downloading our practice test and study guide, you can avoid the wait and start practicing for your knowledge exam today.

3. In Person

All states offer the drivers license knowledge exam in person, and most states require you to take the exam at a physical testing facility. Some states may provide practice test booklets at DMV locations. However, your nearest DMV location may be far from where you live, and you will be required to visit the DMV during its office hours. Additionally, you may need to wait in line with other DMV customers in order to get your practice test, which can waste a lot of time. You can avoid the hassle of visiting a DMV office by downloading our practice test, which includes all the information you need to know to pass your knowledge exam and start driving.

Our Illinois DMV practice test is designed to help you pass your written exam. This exam is used by the state to determine whether you have the knowledge required to operate a motor vehicle. It is preferable to pass the permit or driving test the first time you try it because you will be unable to schedule an appointment for a re-take if you fail. Instead, you are required to wait in line. Depending on where you are located, this could mean making the trip to the DMV multiple times and then waiting in line before taking your exam. The skills exam makes you go through the same process.

In the sections below, you will learn how to practice for the driving test in Illinois: the questions you are required to answer, the maneuvers you will need to perform, the benefits of taking an Illinois driving practice test and the actions that will immediately disqualify you from getting driving privileges.

What are the benefits of taking a Illinois DMV practice test?

For every 10 drivers that take the permit test, only three pass on their first attempt. Our Illinois DMV permit practice test has been shown to make it five times more likely that you pass on your first attempt. It does so by using driving test questions that are similar to what you will find at the DMV. This allows you to understand what to expect when you go to the DMV.

Did You Know? Less than half of new drivers get a passing score on the DMV written knowledge exam on their first try.

It is particularly important to study for the permit test in Illinois, because the state does not allow you to schedule your tests. Instead, you have to wait in line. Given the DMV’s business hours, this can mean you are required to take time off work or school. Rather than going through this process multiple times, our drivers permit practice test helps you pass your tests on your first attempt.

What is included in DMV.com’s Illinois drivers license practice test?

Our Illinois drivers license practice test has 50 questions. These questions cover the same material that you can learn about in the Rules of the Road Manual and our study guide. It should be noted that the Illinois DMV only tests you on material that is found in your Rules of the Road Manual.

Illinois Drivers License Test Rules and Requirements

There are 35 drivers license test questions on the permit exam. You must get at least 28 of the driving test questions correct, which means the minimum passing score is 80 percent. The longest amount of time you will have to wait to retake the written exam is 30 days, and this is only if the test proctor suspects you of cheating.

The test has two sorts of questions: multiple choice and True or False. You will not be required to answer essay questions. All locations offered the test in English, but you may be able to get the test in Polish or Spanish, depending on which office you go to.

Though our Illinois study guide is designed to help applicants pass the permit exam, it also contains helpful information for when you take your skills exam.

How to Pass a Driving Test in Illinois

The Illinois drivers license test questions will cover the material that can be found in Chapters 3-13 of the Rules of the Road Manual.

During your skills exam, you will be automatically disqualified from receiving your license if you break any laws. This includes texting while driving, speeding, failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign and forgetting to wear your seatbelt. Along with these requirements, you will be expected to perform the following basic driving maneuvers:

  • Parking
  • Stopping
  • Turning and using your turn signals
  • Reversing your vehicle

You should pay particular attention to your administrator’s comments. If you fail, you should think of these notes while you study, as this will prevent you from making the same mistakes twice. You are not allowed to take the skills exam more than three times in a given year.
